Transition_doc — 2022.

Transition is a project focusing on new Israeli immigrants who fled Ukraine and Russia after Russia's military invasion of Ukraine on February 24th. Some of our heroes arrived in the country a little earlier, but in the end stayed because of the war. Here you can read their stories and learn a bit more about these newcomers.

Each person featured has three commonalities: they’ve all been personally affected by the war, profoundly condemn this war, and experienced forced emigration. But apart from that, their stories are very different. Some fled Kyiv in a rush hearing the sound of sirens, others had planned the emigration process in advance with farewell parties. Some never placed much value on their Jewish origins, others celebrated bar-mitzvahs and attended synagogue. Some went to every protest, others decided not to read the news at all. And lastly, some are planning to stay in Israel, while others are waiting for the end of the war or a change of political regime to return home.

The project was created by photographer/journalist, Daniel Mashtakov and journalist/editor, Alina Fooks.
